John Whitaker, Jr. son of John Whitaker, Sr. and Martha Gough Whitaker, was born 1735 in Colonial Virginia. He was about ten years old when his family migrated to Halifax County, North Carolina and settled on land that became known as the Whitaker Plantation. His father died when he was a teenager and he and his younger siblings were cared for by their mother and older brothers. John, Jr. married Olive Taylor and they were parents of seven known children. He was in his forties when the chords of rebellion reached the backwater country in North Carolina. He supported the patriots and the cause of freedom and joined the local militia. His four sons served in the American forces during the Revolutionary War. After the war, his extended family migrated to Kershaw District in South Carolina where John, Jr. died in 1789. His sons, Hudson, Samuel Taylor and Thomas moved on to Georgia when land became available through a state Land Lottery.
