"It is not known when Isaac left South Carolina and arrived in Mississippi. However, he appears in Marion County, Mississippi on a census taken in 1816 as Isaac Fartinbing. Also, on January 12, 1817, Isaac applied for Federal land consisting of 160 acres in Marion County. He received his final certificate on May 1, 1833. (See Government Land in Mississippi, page 39)
By comparing census records and family information, Isaac and Bethany had the following children:
William, born in South Carolina about 1799
Belza, born in South Carolina about 1802
Unknown daughter, born about 1805 in South Carolina (on the 1820 census reports)
Martha Charlotte, born about 1809 in South Carolina
Hugh, born in South Carolina in 1811
Irvin, born in Mississippi in 1815
John, born in Mississippi in 1817
Daughter, thought to be named Barbara, born between 1816 and 1820 (on the 1820 census)
After living a long life, Isaac died without leaving a will. On July 18, 1846, Bethany petitioned the court for a year's provisions out of the estate of Isaac Fortenberry. According to this petition, Isaac died November, 1845. On July 20, 1846, the court designated Bethany as Isaac's widow and granted her request. His sons, Irvin and Hugh were appointed as administrators. The petition for final settlement was dated Novemeber 21, 1848 and requested the following heirs to appear in court:
John W. Fortenberry of Marion County
William Fortenberry of Lawrence County
Belza Ryals, wife of Hardy Ryals of Lawrence County
Thomas Pigott, husband of Martha Charlotte, deceased of Washington Parish, Louisiana
Irvin Fortenberry of Marion County
Hugh Fortenberry of Marion County
Bethany does not appear on this court order because she died sometime between July, 1846 and November, 1848.
Isaac's grandson, Claude Fortenberry, stated in a letter to Martha Deaton, in 1959, that Isaac and Bethany are buried "here on our old place". Isaac's daughter, Martha Charlotte, is also said to be buried here. Claude was then living on the property originally owned by Isaac. Family cemeteries were cleared of weeds and brush in the fall of each year. At times the question arose as to who was buried in a particular grave, since many of the earlier graves were marked with only a board, rock or brick. In some cases, this is our only knowledge of where some family members are buried, as in this case. After the death of Claude, the family cemetery on his property was bulldozed and all traces lost, much to our loss."
