Michaelis was the original family surname on Levy's immigration papers and also the birth certificate of his first child born in the USA, Matilda "Tillie". On the 1880 Fed Census the name Michaleis was shortened to Michael, and later in life Levy adopted the more Americanized name "Lewis" as his first name.
Levy lived in Brooklyn for most of his life and he and Bessie raised 9 children. They had 11 children altogether, but a few died early in life. Levy's occupation was cloth cutter and tailor.
