Consort [husband] of Nancy Nantz
Age 54 yrs. 1 mo. 13 days.

"Suggested edit: James Reed Nance changed the spelling of his surname to Nantz, (which spelling was later adopted by his eight children). He came with his family from Virginia to Floyd County, Indiana and is known to have also lived in Clark and Harrison Counties.

He first wed Mary McNary on 11 Jun 1815, and with her had three children prior to her death. James next married Nancy, daughter of Pierce and Nancy Chamberlain, on 20 Jun 1824. They were the parents of five children.

James was a farmer for most of his life, but after his sons were grown, he purchased a tannery at Laconia which they all operated together.

He died suddenly of apoplexy (stroke) on 19 Feb 1849.

His children were Georia (a.k.a. Jeremiah), Orville, Alonzo, Venevia, Navasaton, Versalia, Epervia, and William.

(Information compiled from “The Nance Memorial: A History of the Nance Family,” available free online; and other available vital records.)"
