Eldest child of Clement Nance, Sr. by his wife, Mary (Jones), Dorothy married Joseph Burton while her family was still residing in Virginia.

She and her husband came to Southern Indiana with their eldest children about the time her parents arrived there at what later became Floyd County, in March of 1805.

About 1818, Dorothy and her husband moved their family to Vigo County. Sometime afterwards, they moved again, this time to Parke County, where they settled near Rockville.

Dorothy appears on the 1850 census mortality schedule for Parke County, listed as "Dortha" Burton. The schedule states she died in February of that year, after suffering from a cold for five days.

(More information on Dorothy and her family can be found in the book ‘The Nance Memorial,’ which is available online at no charge.)
