Shadrach Reese Dead
Veteran of Civil War Answers Call Of Death—Was Well Known Citizen

Shadrach Reese, for many years a resident of Nanticoke and an old soldier who participated in many battles, was claimed by death at his home on East Noble street yesterday shortly after 12 o'clock.
Death was due to complications and although Mr. Reese had not been in robust health for some time, he was able to attend to his duties as a fan runner for the Susquehanna Coal company until three weeks ago when he was taken ill and compelled to relinquish his work. Since that time he was confined to his bed and sank steadily until the end came.
Mr. Reese was aged 72. He was born in Wales and with his parents came to America at the age of 3 years. Pittston, Hazleton and Nanticoke were the towns in which his life was passed and in all these he made many friends who will be grieved to learn of his death. For the last twenty-nine years he had lived here and during this time was a valued employee of the Susquehanna Coal company.
In the trying days of '61, he was among the boys in blue who upheld the honor of Luzerne County and his discharge an honorable one and obtained at the close of the war contains the following splendid account:
"Shadrach Reese enlisted August 17, 1861 from Luzerne County, Pa., and was mustered into the United States service at Philadelphia, Pa., to serve three years as private under Captain Craig and Colonel J. W. Geary in company with Twenty-eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers.
The regiment was assigned to 2nd B, 1st division, 2nd corps, Army of Potomac, and Comrade Reese shared its fortunes in all engagements as follows: Harper's Ferry, September 15, '61; Point of Rocks, September 29, '61; Bolivar Heights, October 16, '61; Leesburg, December 17, '61; Lavestsville, March 1, '62; Middleburg, March 28, '62; Piedmont, May 10, '62; Linden, May 15, '62; Salem, July 6, '62; Cedar Creek, August 9, '62; Bull Run, August 30, '62; Antietam, September 17, '62; Winchester, December 3, '62; Chancellorsvile, May 1, '63; Gettysburg, July 3. '63; Look Out Mountain, November 4, '63; Ringgold, November 27, '63.
Comrade Reese was honorably discharged December 28, '63 at Wahantche Valley, Tenn., and re-enlisted as a veteran Dec. 29, '63 in Co. C, 147d Regt., PA Vol. Infantry, with Captain W. J. Mackey and Col. Arlo Pardee.
He was engaged at Deep Gap, May 8, '64; Resaca, May 13, '64; New Hope, June 4, '64; Pine Knob, June 13, '64; Kenesaw Mt., June 24, '64; Fall of Atlanta, Sept. 2, '64; March to Sea, July 15, '64; and was honorably discharged at the close of the war."
Mr. Reese was a charter member of Nungent Post, Pittston, and a member of Robinson Post of Hazleton.
Mr. Reese was married to Miss Hannah Klingerman of Eckley on December 24, 1866, and an event they had looked forward to with keen anticipation, the celebration of their golden wedding, will be prevented by death.
The survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. John Sherwood, Mrs. Frank Hill, of Nanticoke; three sons, Davis, of Merry Dee, Schuylkill County; Harry, of Wilkes-Barre, and George, of Nanticoke; one sister, Mrs. Thomas Morris, of West Pittston, and one brother, Abednego, of Buffalo, NY. Twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon with services at the home on East Noble street at 2 o'clock. Rev. H. W. Johnson of Bethel Congregational Church will officiate, and interment will be in Nanticoke cemetery.
