He married Florence Higgins on Aug. 23, 1949 in Leavenworth.
He grew up in Hays and attended Fort Hays State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in music education in 1946. He earned a master's degree in music theory in 1950 and a doctor's degree in musicology in 1957 from the Univ. of Michigan. He taught music in Quinter from 1946 to 1948 before moving to Rhode Island from 1957 to 1985. He served as department chairman from 1968 to 1979.
He was a member of the St. Francis Church, Wakefield, and the Hays Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Music Teachers national Assoc., Rhode Island, Music Educators National Conference, American Musicological Society, Int. Musicological Society, Music Library Assoc., and the College Music Society.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son Martin Michael, Redondo Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Kathleen Ann Giebler, Providence, R.I.; four brothers, Edmund, Red Cloud, Neb., Harold, Hays, Patrick, Colby, and Norman, Hays; a sister, Bernice Schumacher, Chesterfield, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert, and a sister, Sybilla Schukman.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Church, Wakefield, with Father Allaire officiating; burial in the Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, R.I. Visiting hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Forbes Funeral Home, Wakefield.
