Born in Helmstadt, he may have been baptized 'Leonhard Christian' although no documents have been found showing he went by any name other than 'Christian' or one of its derivatives.

Christian Rudy came to America with his parents and siblings in 1849, arriving at New Orleans and then coming north to Harrison County, Indiana.

He married Delila Caroline Wiseman at Crawford County in 1868, having six known children with her through 1880, during which time they resided in Jennings Township, Crawford County. Evidence suggests that Delila was the mother of all Christian's children.

After Delila's, he married Louisa A. Roberts at Jasper in Dubois County on August 1, 1887. She presumably died soon after or divorced him, as he married again.

His third wife was Louisa Boyles, who he married on November 7, 1890 at Dubois County.

Christian actively farmed until well into his 70's, advertising for sale "a fine gray stallion" weighing 1,500 pounds in 1917.

He sold his land to his son-in-law, Andy Schwab, and lived for a time with his own son, William after Louisa's death.
