This record is for a unknown little boy who was baptised 'Nicholas Box' in St Nicholas' Church, Deptford, Kent on 12th May 1816. In the baptismal register of the church, his father and mother are recorded as 'unknown'. His baptismal entry simply reads 'left outside workhouse door'. He was given the name 'Nicholas' after the church he was baptised in and 'Box' presumably because he was left outside the workhouse in a box. The church's curate, D Jones performed the baptism. The next record for him is a burial record, again for St Nicholas's Church. The date is 13th June 1816. Meaning he survived in the workhouse for just one month. At his burial his age is recorded as '3 months'. The burial is again performed by the church's curate D Jones. Nicholas Box is a little boy who has been buried and unremembered for 200 years.
