The "Matt Cohen Award: In Celebration of a Writing Life" was established in his honour.
"Established by a group of anonymous donors, the Matt Cohen Award recognizes a lifetime of distinguished work by a Canadian writer, working in either poetry or prose in either French or English. A founding member of the Writers' Union of Canada, Mr. Cohen was a celebrated and prolific writer who died in 1999 at the age of 56." - The Writers' Trust of Canada
Some sources say that Cohen was born in Kingston, Ontario. His obituary, published in Maclean's magazine (13 Dec 1999) and included in the Canadian Encyclopedia, says that he was born in Montreal and raised in Kingston.
Cohen's epitaph, “Sólo Dios sabe cuánto te quise”, is from Gabriel García Márquez’s novel, Love in the Time of Cholera. Here is the passage it is taken from:
… He managed to recognize her amid the tumult, through the tears of the incomparable pain of dying without her, and looked at her for the last time for always and forever, with the brightest, saddest, most grateful eyes that she had ever seen in the half century of their life together, and managed to say to her with his last breath: Only God knows how much I loved you.
