Lewis, or, as most records spell it, Louis D. Dortch (my great-great-great grandfather), was born in Henry County, Tennessee, to Mexico Powell and Isaac C. Dortch, Jr. He was the seventh of nine children. He was very young when his family moved to the Knob area, on the border between Greene and Clay Counties, in Arkansas.

Louis married Eliza J. Lamb. They had a daughter, Letha Ann "Annie" in 1889. Eliza died soon after. Louis remarried in 1891-1892 to Irene Elizabeth Haneline. Together, they had seven more children: Ada, William, Louis Jr., Lillie, Sammy, Thomas "Noah", and Ellen.

Irene died in 1928. Louis died at the age of ninety-three in 1959.
