A Life Remembered ~ Margaret Smith Blauvelt Tremper

The following information was contributed by Carole Nurmi Cummings, a Dutch descendant from the 1600s and a cousin.

An Aged Woman's Death

Mrs. Tremper Leaves Four Generations Behind Her

Up to Her Death on Saturday Last, Five Generations of This Remarkable Family Were Living – Great-Grandchildren to sing at the Funeral

Margaret, widow of John Tremper, died at the home of her son, Harmon Blauvelt, on High Avenue on Saturday night, at 9:30 o'clock, age 88 years, 9 months and 22 days. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, at 1:30 P. M. at the house, and at 2 o'clock at Grace Church. The Rev. Franklin Habbott will officiate. The interment will be in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Tremper was born at Orangeburgh, her parents being Garret and Rebecca Smith. That she came of a rugged, long-lived family is shown not only by the length of years through which she passed, but also of the fact that she leaves four generations behind her. Before her death there were five generations of this family living, and those who survive have a picture, taken some four or five years ago, of representatives of all these generations arranged in a group.

The deceased was twice married. Her first husband was John Blauvelt, who died years ago, and her second husband, who has been dead twenty-seven years, was John Tremper, the first pilot of the steamboat Orange, which was the first boat to open up river commission between Nyack and New York.

Two sons by her first husband survive Mrs. Tremper. They are Harmon and Cornelius Blauvelt, of High Avenue. The children of these two sons, and grandchildren of Mrs. Tremper, are Mrs. Lavinia Harris; Mrs. Louisa Wood, Mr. William Blauvelt, Mrs. William Taylor and Miss Estella Blauvelt of Nyack, children of Cornelius Blauvelt; Mrs. R. Post, John T. Blauvelt, and Walter Q. Blauvelt, children of Harmon Blauvelt, all living in Paterson, New Jersey.

There are 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. The latter are: Anita Kiss, William Beiber Kiss, Mary Bimson and LeRoy Montress.

Mrs. Tremper, also leaves one stepson, Hiram Tremper, with eleven children and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Tremper spent all of her life at Orangeburgh, the house of her birth, except the last twelve years, which she has spent in Nyack. In her early life at Orangeburgh, she became a member of the Tappan Reformed Church and has never withdrawn from that ancient and honored organization. Many people in Nyack know her and formed a strong affection for her because of her kindly, genial and gentle manner. Her face always radiated the sunshine of her nature, and her many friends will regret to learn of her death.

At the funeral services in Grace Church there will be singing by several of the great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tremper was a member of the Highland Home Ladies' Auxiliary, and that organization is invited to attend the funeral.
