T-4 D E Lawson, Florence, Was Buried Yesterday
Florence, Dec 18 [1948] -- Funeral services for T-4 David E Lawson, Jr, were held at the graveside in Mount Hope cemetery today, conducted by Dr James E Cousar, Jr, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.
Sergeant Lawson, son of Mr and Mrs D E Lawson, was buried with full military honors, Fort Jackson officials assisting.
His body arrived here Friday afternoon.
He died on September 25, 1945, in Japan as a result of injuries received in an accident while engaged in the performance of his duties in the medical ward on the sixth floor of St Luke's Medical center, situated in the city of Tokyo, Japan. He was caring for the sick when he presumably overheard a report that the door to the elevator was jammed. Shortly thereafter, he was seen going in the direction of an elevator with an instrument for opening the door and was heard to make the remark that he would fix it. Unfortunately however, the went to the wrong elevator, pried open the door to the shaft, and accidentally fell in. he died shortly afterwards.
Sergeant Lawson entered the service in January of 1941. He first served at Fort Jackson, then at Fort Lewis, Washington, and on April 1, 1945, was transferred to the Phillipine Islands. From there he was sent to Japan. He was in the 42nd General Hospital detachment of the United States Army.
Sergeant was born in Florence May 11, 1918. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Prior to his induction into the service, he was employed by the Sonoco Products company of Hartsville.
He is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Davie E Lawson of Florence; three sisters, Mrs W H Zeigler of Charleston, Mrs Frank J Neilan of Somerset, Penn; Mrs J A Grimsley, Jr of Columbia, and a brother, W J Lawson of Florence.
