Lawson Walton Smith was born on September 30, 1885 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Lawson White Smith (1858– ) and Frances King "Fannie" (Garrett) Smith (1858–1918).
A Linotype operator for E T Lowe Publishing Company, he was single at the time of the 1920 and 1930 census polling, but by the 1940 census he was married to Idabelle (Smart) Smith (ca 1891- ).
Lawson was 57 years old when he died of heart problems on January 17, 1943 in Nashville. Burial was two days later in Spring Hill Cemetery.
