John, a clerk by occupation, married Lucy Fitzhugh Mayo on 28 August 1839. They had at least five children: Alice, Adolphus, Elizabeth, John Harvie, and Joseph.

John was the grandson and namesake of the famous Richmond Presbyterian minister, Parson John Blair. He worked for a time as Treasurer of the Richmond & Danville Railroad.

He died at 320 S. 3rd Street of "Softening of the Brain", per Cemetery records. His grave in the plot he owned is unmarked.
