Bateman Rittenhouse served as a Private in Company B, 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment. He was mustered in on August 14, 1862. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864. After months of convalescing he returned to duty, and was mustered out of the Army on June 20, 1865.
