Herman Gimbel, 57, died Wednesday, October 2 at Weston County Memorial Hospital in Newcastle following a sudden illness. He was the son of Ludwig and Christine (Mitzel) Gimbel. He grew up and received his education in Artas, graduating from high school in Zealand, N.D. in 1957. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was discharged in October of 1963. He was married April 27, 1962 to Verna Ottenbacher in Pollock, S.D. After his military discharge, the couple moved to Rapid City, S.D. where he worked for Peter Kewitt and Sons doing road construction. He later worked for Leonard Construction in Douglas. In 1989 he went to work for Emulsified Asphalt Co. where he was working at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of Glenrock; son Dean Gimbel and daughter, Sheri Haupt, both of Casper; three grandchildren; three brothers, Benjamin Gimbel of Rapid City, Ludwig Gimbel of Chino, Ariz., and Ed Gimbel of Gladstone, N.D.; seven sisters, Kathy Cordry of Black Hawk, S.D. June Meidinger of Mandan, N.D., Christine Woods of Mesa, Ariz., Rosie Turnquist of Hot Springs, S.D., Elsie Heiser of Parker Prairie, Minn., Hedey Schott of Rapid City, S.D. and Sue Holzaworth of Mandan, N.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
