Through his father, he was a direct descendant of both Richard Warren and William White, two of the original pilgrims that arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Mayflower in 1620.
Newton was a blacksmith and lived in Livingston, Park County, Montana. Later, he went to work at a sawmill in Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana where he was a laborer. Newton lived at 124 S. 28th Street in Billings. He last worked at the sawmill in September 1932.
He married Dora Eilts on December 9, 1912, in Livingston. They had one child together, a daughter named Nina Adeline Dawes. Newton and Dora later divorced and she remarried becoming Mrs. Dora Gaggio. Newton did not remarry.
He died on approximately June 28, 1934. The coroner's report lists his cause of death as unknown. Only his skeleton remained when he was found on September 24, 1934 in Mossmain, Montana. He was buried on October 12, 1934, in Mountview Cemetery, Billings, Montana. He was 58 years old.

Henry J. N. Dawes Rites to Be Friday
The funeral service for Henry John Newton Dawes, whose body was found near Mossmain September 23, will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. from Settergren's funeral home, it was announced Wednesday night. The Rev. Forrest W. Werts, paster of the First Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mountview cemetery.
The skeleton of Mr. Dawes was positively identified last Friday after almost two weeks of intensive investigation by Mr. Settergren, aided by W.W. McKenzie, undersheriff.
