Lester J. Cherney, age 73, devoted husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather, was called by God
quickly, dying unexpectedly at his home in rural
Kellnersville, on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007.

Lester was born on May 23, 1933, in the town of Franklin,
son of the late Wencel and Mary Zeman Cherney, their second
of two children. He was a 1951 graduate of Reedsville High
School. Lester took his passion for life into his career as
a farmer for many years, and also an independent insurance
agent from 1963 until the present. He was on the board of
directors for Manitowoc Mutual Insurance Company from 1963
to 2003 and served as manager from 1985 to 2003. He was on
the Wisconsin Association of Mutual Insurance Companies
board for six years and served as president in 1999.

Lester's presence in our community was felt by everyone;
he was well respected by all. He was a proud member of the
Friends of the Branch River. He played his clarinet at
numerous events for the past 45 years in the Wayside-Morrison Band. He was proud to hand each of his children a diploma from Reedsville High School, where he served as a board member for 30 years, 18 years as president. He was a director of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards from 1989 until 1995. He served as the town of Franklin chairman from 1981 until 1987. He also served as town assessor from 1959 to 1963. Lester was part of the Manitowoc County Solid Waste Advisory Board from 1984 to 1989. Lester's passion for civic responsibility was above and beyond expectations.

Lester's strong faith in God was evident in how he lived his life each day. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, currently serving as president of the Parish Council and the Holy Name Society. He was chairman of the Holy Name Society ham dinner for many years. He further served the Lord by being lector and usher in church and extended his faith by attending weekly bible class.

He married his best friend from grade school and soul mate, Doris Muench, on Oct. 20, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kellnersville. They returned to his homestead to raise their family and begin their blessed life together. Anyone who knew Lester, knew of his commitment to family, faith in Our Father, and his love of the world around him. As a husband, Lester fulfilled his vows by being Doris' support in good times and in bad, through sickness and health.

They were best friends, card mates, and fishing partners,
throughout his life. As a Dad, he took great pride in raising his family. Each child has fond memories of fishing trips, hunting, snowmobiling, cutting wood, and road trips with Dad while he made insurance calls. As a grandpa, he instilled a love of life in each one of his grandchildren. He was each grandchild's number one fan at their sporting events. He demonstrated patience while teaching them to fish, hunt and catch crayfish. The grandkids always anticipated Easter egg hunts, buggy rides to the river, helping grandpa harvest the garden, and tasting his "gourmet" foods.
(Survivors omitted for privacy.)
He was preceded in death by one brother, Victor Cherney; one sister-in-law, Marlene Kvitek; and one brother-in-law, Joseph Kvitek Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Kellnersville. The Mass will be concelebrated by the Revs. Ronald Colombo, Rallen Stencil, and Francis Kerscher. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Kellnersville, on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
