On August 28, 1875, at age 21, William, by now residing in Pennsylvania, married Adaline K "Addie" Osterhout (1856-1923). The couple had four children and seemingly adopted or helped raise a fifth:
Mary Etta Kilmer (1875-1887)
Cora Emily Kilmer Riff (1878-1966)
Lewis Milo Kilmer Blackmer (1879-1974)
James Henry Kilmer (1883-1964)
Carrie Mae Kilmer McHale Kilmer (1891-1991)
The family was residing in Fox Township, Sullivan County, according to the 1880 census, where William was a farmer. By 1892, 5 years after the death of their eldest daughter, they had moved north to Otego, Otsego County, New York (NY census). William's mother as well as nephew William Deloss Alger, 12, had joined the household, the latter following the death of his mother, William's sister, Eliza.
William was a shop-owner by the turn-of-the-century; the 1900 census appears to read "barber shop" in Worchester village, Otsego County (where his mother was likely born, and lived until the 1840s). Five years later, according to the 1905 NY census, William was a stone-cutter in Oneonta.
The 1910 census found William single, a farmer, and living in Bethlehem, Albany County with a farm-laborer boarder. Meanwhile, Addie and daughter Carrie appeared on a hospital census in Oneonta, where Addie was employed as a cook and Carrie as a waitress. By the 1915 state census, the couple was reunited in Oneonta, with Addie identified as "wife." Daughter Carrie McHale and family were residing next door.
William died December 8, 1918 in Oneonta, and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery. Addie remarried (LeGrande Smith), and, following her death in 1923, was buried alongside William.
