Richard was the son of Samuel and Rachel (Lucas) Gunsaulis. He married his cousin Jane Gonzales a daughter of James and Agnes "Nancy" (Macklin) Gonzales.
Richard and Jane were married 24 Jan 1828 in West Union, Columbiana County,Ohio. After they married Richard and Jane reportedly went to Beaver County, PA where Samuel was born in 1830 and Silas in 1833. Beaver County lies just east of Columbiana County, OH across the border with Pennsylvania. It is likely that Richard and Jane were in Pennsylvania for only 5 years. Sometime between 1833 and 1838 Jane and Richard removed to Columbiana County, Ohio. By 1838 Richard and Jane had moved to Missouri where son Benjamin was born.
In 1840 Richard got in to an argument with his neighbor Ewing Ellison. Ellison told him not to come through his gate or he would shoot him. It was just after sunset and Richard stepped through the gate and was shot in the side with a musket ball. He fell to his knees fatally wounded and said "you shot me."
Jane apparently returned to Ohio before Richard's death. Their last son, Richard, was born 1840 in Ohio.
Richard is buried in Gasconade County but his grave has not been located at this time.
