Darlene Medell Galbraith
Darlene Medell Galbraith died peacefully in her sleep July 31, 2014, in Layton, Utah. She was born April 4, 1928, in Ogden, Utah, to William Clarence Medell and Wilhelmina Lyon.
Darlene learned to read at age three, and won awards for poetry and prose in school. When she was in sixth grade she wrote the school play, including the original music. She was editor of the Weber High newspaper, wrote News Notes for the Ogden Standard Examiner and a column for the Ogden Times.
Darlene was also an accomplished pianist and performed with the Utah Symphony. In college she played the piano on her own children's radio show. Later as an elementary school teacher, she wrote an original songbook that she used to teach music.
She married Henry W. Galbraith on June 10, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and Henry completed their degrees at the University of Utah, and throughout their lives they both continued their education, working on advanced degrees and certifications. Darlene worked as a reporter and photographer for The Salt Lake Tribune for 25 years and taught at Kaysville Elementary School for 37 years.
Darlene earned her pilot's license and enjoyed flying airplanes with Henry. Later, on a newspaper assignment, she became the first woman to fly a military jet aircraft out of Hill Air Force Base. Darlene earned many awards in her life, including National Medal of Merit for Aerospace Writing, Utah Arts and Letters Awards from the Utah Air Force Association, dozens of awards for writing and photography, 1998 Utah Women's Lifetime Achievement Award, Epsilon Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, and Woman of the Year 1996.
Darlene was very active in community service and held many positions of leadership in Utah Press Women, Epsilon Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, Kaysville Civic Association, Davis Citizens' Coalition Against Violence, Women's State Legislative Council, and Widowed Persons Service of Salt Lake.
Of all her many accomplishments, Darlene was most proud of her work to establish the Women's Shelter in Kaysville, Utah.
Darlene is survived by her son Ryan and his wife Suzanne, her grandchildren Mackenzie and Cade, step-grandchildren Samuel, Olivia, Henry and Hazel, brother Donald and his wife Wilma, and many other extended family members who loved her very much. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Henry in 1980.
