Son of Asa Risley and Ruth Badger, Lewis was born in Bolton, Tolland County, Connecticut but lived for a time in Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire. On May 13, 1804, he married Katie Swain in Stratford, Vermont and the couple eventually had four children: Lavonia, Winchton, Orville and Jacob. The family moved to Franklin County, Ohio in 1809 where Lewis farmed and dabbled in silver and salt mining. Katie Risley died on December 3, 1820. Lewis married a second time on December 9, 1823 to Mary Ball and the couple had one known child, John Risley.
