Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Corral de Almaguer, Agustín García-Gasco y Vicente entered seminary in Madrid in 1944 and was ordained priest there in May 1956. Serving various ministries and offices, including those of prefect of theologians and professor of the named seminary of Madrid, he founded and directed the Instituto Internacional de Teología a Distancia. Episcopal vicar of the Third Vicariate of Madrid, through the years he delivered lectureships in other entities, including the Cursillos de Cristiandad school and the theological institute of San Damaso. President of the Institución Arzobispo Claret, Gasco was appointed auxiliary bishop for the see of Madrid by Pope John Paul II on March 20, 1985, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following May 11, 1985. Named secretary general of the Spanish Episcopal Conference in 1988, on July 24, 1992, he was named archbishop of the metropolitan see of Valencia, an office which he held until his retirement in January 2009. Pope Benedict XVI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of November 24, 2007, with the title of San Marcello. The Cardinal passed unexpectedly away in Rome, where he had gone to participate in the beatification ceremony of Pope John Paul II, shortly before the ceremony started, of a cardiac crisis. His body was flown back to Spain and in accordance with his wishes, was buried in the cathedral of Valencia.
