The son of William & Sarah Elisabeth (Wetzler) Bair, in 1860 he was a mason living with his family in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had light hair and blue eyes. He married Nancy Ann Shimp October 23, 1862, and fathered Abraham Lincoln (b. 03/13/63), John Sherman (b. 05/04/65), Robert Ellsworth (b. 07/07/67), Benjamin Franklin (b. 08/21/69), George Washington (b. 10/23/70), Mary Alice (b. 07/09/72), James Harrison (b. 07/09/74), and Annie Loretta (b. 10/01/80 - married Jacob Groom).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 19, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865. Note that the regiment is improperly listed on the tombstone. There was no Civil War regiment named "92nd Pennsylvania Cavalry."

Cause of death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage."
