Garnetta Shanks (nee Atchison), a 44-year resident of Mokena, died Friday, June 30, in her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Peace Lutheran Church, New Lenox, with the Rev. Dave Hedlin of Peace Lutheran Church and the Rev. Thomas Newton of the Crossroads Church, New Lenox, officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Mokena.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at Hirsch Funeral Homes Memorial Chapel, Tinley Park.
The former Garnetta Atchison was born April 25, 1913, in Chicago. She was a seamstress.
She is survived by a daughter, Lillie (Joseph) Conway of Mokena, a son, Leon Szpak of Mokena, fours sisters, Margelet Dahlin of Oak Lawn, Ellen Dahlin of Palos Hills, Emily Prosser of Crestwood and Irma (Edward) Morris of Oak Lawn, a brother Wellington Atchison of Florida, two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Leon Szpak, died in 1936. Her second husband, Carl Shanks, died in 1985.
Memorials may be made to the family.
