On August 18, during Operation STARLITE a supply column was ambushed west of the Hamlet of An Cuong (2), as fire from VC recoilless rifles and a barrage of mortar rounds tore into the column of five LVT's and three Flame Tanks, vehicles were disabled and those still mobile were trapped unable to maneuver around the debris. Firing from a concealed trench the VC kept the Marines pinned down, a rescue mission was mounted and as the Marines approached the scene of the ambush they encountered intense hostile fire. At days end there were many casualties, one of them was LCpl Verlon Hadley who killed by a hostile explosion.
