Abt 1861 - 1920
Matt Backman was believed to be about 59 year old when he passed from this life April 25, 1920, at Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah. His commitment papers and death certificate state he was born in Finland about 1861, single, parents unknown, and worked as a miner. Matt had been a patient 27 years, 11 months, and 22 days at the time he died.
Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project: Matt was among 600+ patients of the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum (now known as Utah State Hospital) between 1886 and 1960, buried in the Provo City Cemetery, most in unmarked graves, given a pauper's burial, alone without recognition or ceremony. The Utah State Hospital Forgotten Patients Cemetery Project requested donations to create a monument with individual plaques to honor each of these precious spirits. Thankfully, it was completed and dedicated to them October 10, 2018, in Provo City Cemetery.
More Details: Matt has no USH plaque as of April 2023.
