Racing driver and pilot. Ron Flockhart was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and began racing an MG in 1948. He moved to a Cooper fitted with a Vincent Black Lightning engine and became one of the best drivers in his class. For 1952/53 he raced ERAs, and joined the BRM F1 team in 1954. He didn't really see any success until he joined Ecurie Ecosse in 1956 winning the Le Mans 24hr race in that year and also in 1957. In 1956 he drove a Connaught to 3rd place at the Italian GP. After three unproctive seasons with BRN , in 1960 he drove a works Lotus 18 to 6th place in the French GP, and drove a works Cooper in the US GP at Riverside. He then retired to spend more time flying. After one attempt at the London-to-Sydney air race, in 1962 he was practising over the Dandennong Range, Melbourne, Australia, when he crashed. The cause was never satisfactorily established - he either got disorientated because of cloud, or the North American P-51 Mustang broke up because of turbulence. After a service at the Presbyterian Church of Melbourne, and a cremation, his ashes were scattered from an aeroplane over Scotland.
