Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning of last week at the St. Martin's Catholic Church in St. Martin for Henry Schaefer, a pioneer resident of that community who passed away a few days before. Rev. Cyril Ortman, OSB, officiated, and internment was made in the parish cemetery.

Benedict Schaefer served as crossbearer at the last rites, while Norbert and Nich Schaefer, Romuald Ehresmann, Sylvester Doll, Norbert Klassen and Jerome Evans, all grandsons of the deceased, were pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers were Joseph Blonigen, Mick Schlick, Fred Klaphake, John Doll, Joseph Burg and John Fleischhacker.

Mr. Schaefer was born in Coblenz, Germany, 87 years ago and when he was 12 years of age he came to this country with his parents. The family first settled at Jacobs Prairie and a few years later went to the farm in St. Martin, where Mr. Schaefer died. This farm is now owned by his son, Peter.

At the age of 16 years, Mr. Schaefer operated a ferry across the Sauk River. Later he helped build the bridge at St. Martin. He leaves one step-sister, Mrs. Mike Bisenius, of St. Cloud. In 1880 he married Miss Anna Doll who died 40 years ago. There are six surviving children - Peter, Mrs. Math Klassen, Mrs. Joseph Doll, Mrs. Ben Mondloch, and Mrs. John Ehresmann, St. Martin; and John Schaefer, St. Cloud. Mrs. August Klassen is dead.

Mr. Schaefer was a member of the Oblates of St. Benedict and the St. Joseph Society. For 25 years he was agent for the Crusaders Almanac. He was clerk in District 81 for 33 years and a member of the town board for 15 years.
