Born December 10, 1932, in Berlin Junction, New Oxford, she was the daughter of the late Charles I. and Mary P. (Staub) Groft.
Barb was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hanover. She was employed for a number of years as a seamstress with Middleburg Manufacturing. Later in life she was employed at Little People's Day Care, taking care of the infant room. Barb was a member of the YWCA and enjoyed swimming. A skilled seamtress, she was an avid sewer and made many of her children's outfits. Mrs. Hess also enjoyed cooking and baking pies, but she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Edgar, she is survived by two daughters, Kimberly A. Gross of Orrtanna and Lisa M. Keiser of Gettysburg; three siblings, Mary Gebhart of New Oxford, Margaret Wagaman of York, and William Groft of New Oxford; five grandchildren, Joshua, Nicholas, and Amybeth Boyer, and Torie and Brooke Brilhart; and three great-grandchildren, Jake, Emory, and Imogen Boyer. Mrs. Hess was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Boyer; and six siblings, Richard, Harold, Donald, and Charles Groft, Doris Hockensmith, and Deanie Stuller.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331 with the Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons as celebrant.Final committal will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Church Cemetery, Hanover.
