Omer Barriere, Jr. was struck by a New York Central Buddliner on a trestle spanning the French River in Leicester. The accident victim was carrying a knapsack weighing about 15 pounds and was returning from an overnight camping trip in a nearby area on the west side of the river. He was with his two brothers, Richard and David.

Police believe the boy tried to avoid the eastbound train from Springfield but stumbled. After being hit, he was dragged 38 feet before it came to a stop. Omer J Barriere Sr, widowed father of nine, said the boy suffered from multiple sclerosis and often “stumbled around” a great deal.

Besides his father he left behind six brothers and two sisters; and his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Barriere. He was a junior at Leicester High School, described as a friendly and hardworking student. A service was held at St. Aloysius Church, with Mass at a later date since he died on Holy Thursday and was buried on Holy Saturday.
