Elizabeth was the first of 11 children born to the farmer John Carper (b.1757, d.1841) and Eve Murray (b.1761, d.1841). Her siblings were William, Frederick, Cathey, Margaret, Henry, John, Nancy, Mary, Eliza and Hetty Carper.

Her father, John Carper, fought during the Revolutionary War at the battles of Eutaw Springs and Camden. Both of her parents were born and died in Virginia.

Elizabeth Carper married James Cain Sr on 7 Sep 1802 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. All of their children except their last, Stewart Cain, were born in Montgomery Co., Virginia. They move to Ohio in 1829 and Stewart was born in Shelby Co., Ohio.

They named their many children: John A., Nancy, Sarah, James Jr., William, Elizabeth, Louisa, Jacob, Margaret, Mary, Eliza, Hester, Henry Jackson, Charles H., David and Stewart Cain.
