As the memorial for Daniel Michael "Dan" Cronin is being updated, we are in the throws of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, and medical science is working at what President Trump has named "Operation Warp Speed" to develop therapeutics and one or more safe and effective vaccines. It is interesting to consider that when Dan was born, now more than 100 years ago, the world was also facing pandemic conditions and the ravages of what history remembers as the Spanish Flu.

Dan, his four brothers (James "Jim", Fenton, Jerry, and Frank), and his sister (Mary Margaret) lived first as a family in Platte Center, Nebraska. In Nebraska, Dan's father, Timothy Joseph Cronin, owned a livery, and served as the 2nd Fire Chief in Rural Platte Center. Dan's mother, always known as "Nellie", was a school teacher. The family later relocated to Lyman county, South Dakota where Tim, who had a great love of horses and mules, became a homesteader and rancher. All five of the Cronin kids became life long South Dakotans.
