Mrs. Sawicki was born Aug. 30, 1910, at Paplin, the daughter of Frank and Julia Mendyk Curtis. She grew up and received her education in Paplin in Sherman County. She married Edward Sawicki on Feb. 28, 1927, at Farwell. They farmed in Howard County before moving to Grand Island in 1942. She worked at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II. Mr. Sawicki died Dec. 28, 1973. She had been a babysitter for numerous churches and organizations in Grand Island. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament parish and altar society, the Perpetual Adoration Society and Catholic Daughters of America.
Survivors include two sons, Virgil of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Ronald of North Platte; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Alberta) Rutherford of Omaha, Mrs. Lewis (Judy) Beck of Saratoga, Calif., Mrs. Charles (Sandy) Mertens of Superior and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Hitchler of North Platte, 28 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
