"Rev. Samuel H. Gregory was born in Noble Township, April 11, 1836, within two miles of where he now lives. His parents, Joel and Nancy (Springer) Gregory, were natives of Kentucky. He was reared on a farm and had a common school education. When nineteen years old he began life for himself, farming on rented land. He was married July 18, 1856, to Miss Elizabeth R. Hinkle, of Noble Township; she was a daughter of Lewis and Saloma (Reed) Hinkle, who were of German parentage. Mr. Gregory followed farming until 1871, when he commenced burning lime. Being successful in this, he has continued the business to the present time. He was called to the pulpit by Bishop Keenan, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1876, and has been actively engaged in ministerial work ever since. He is the father of seven children: Wilbur, Sarah, McClellan, Carrie, Joe, Effie, Chester. His wife died August 18, 1887, after a long illness. Mr. Gregory is a man highly esteemed, of fine qualities and noble character, and is an enthusiastic Christian."

Body Will Be Brought to Geneva for Burial

"Rev. Samuel H. Gregory, a well known and highly respected minister of the gospel, died at his home near Columbus, at three o'clock yesterday morning. The funeral services will be held from the late residence at seven thirty o'clock this evening. At seven o'clock Thursday morning the body will be brought to Geneva for burial.

"Rev. Gregory was born in Shelby County and was seventy-four years of age. He was a southern Methodist minister and had been engaged in the ministry since his early manhood. Because of his age and failing health he had no regular charge in recent years, yet he preached from time to time and many there were who sought opportunities of listening to his sermons, which were ever fraught with words of wisdom and earnest pleas for the better and higher life. His last regular charge was at Green Valley, Brown County. He was three times married and is survived by a widow and five children. The children are Prof. C.A. Gregory, a high school teacher; Ira Gregory, of Shelby county; Mack Gregory, of Waldron; Mrs. Carey Hatten, of Geneva, and Wilbur Gregory, of Kansas."
