James Kermit Adair is the son of James Lee Adair and Caroline Evans. He was born in Georgia, the 8th of their 9 children. He served in Co A, 40th GA Infantry, enlisting 1 Mar 1863 at Dalton, GA, and his last card entry on 17 Nov 1864 has him entering St. Mary's Hospital, Montgomery, Ala on 13 Nov - "present/sick.". (Record can be downloaded on Footnote/Fold 3)

He m1 Nancy Baxter (dau of John Baxter and Sarah Williams) and had 5 children: Sarah C (Sally), William H., John Thomas and Theller/Thella; James K. Adair m2 Theodocia Wells in 1885 and had 3 more children: James Wiren, Marjorie A. (Margie) and Dill. After she died, he m3 Blanche Landrum. They had no children and she is buried in Cottonwood Cemetery with James K.

Following Nancy Baxter's whereabouts is problematic as several Adair men married "Nancys." She apparently did NOT want to follow James K. back to Texas where he had gone to find a new home for his family. He returned to Georgia and eventually he and two adult sons took their families to Texas, stopping to visit the Hoopers in Alabama on the way. Nancy remained in Georgia, and James K later married Theodocia and had more children.

The Nancy Baxter who died in Paulding on 29 Feb 1924 is NOT the correct Nancy. That is Nancy Jane Crayton m. William Harrison Adair, son of John Bluett. Neither is Nancy Miliner Adair who d. 16 Apr 1927 in Morgan Co. She was married to a J.N. Adair. Our Nancy Baxter who married James K. Adair remained in Georgia where we "assume" they were officially divorced. She is listed as "mother" on the Texas DC of son John Thomas Adair. We believe that the correct Nancy may be listed in 1910 on the census in Dallas, Paulding Co with her daughter Sallie. She is 66, divorced and had 3 surviving children of 5 - meaning there is one unnamed child who probably died young. (The whereabouts of Theller/Thella is unknown also.) this is the only later census record which fits. What happened to her after this is unknown. She does not appear as Nancy Adair in 1920 so she may have died between 1910-1920 or remarried and is listed with a new last name. (needs more research!)

James K. Adair's parents, James Lee Adair and Caroline Evans, and his grandfather Bozeman Adair can be found in Lane Cemetery, Paulding Co, Georgia. Many of his other relatives are buried there also.

At one time, James K. was the Postmaster of Adair, Texas. Basically, it was his ranch where the mail was delivered, and he sorted it all in his living room!!!

After the War, James was a member of the United Confederate Veterans (UCV) in Texas, and his Confederate Service military record can be found on Footnote/Fold3.

Compliled Military Service Record - M266 R447 - Co A, 40th GA Infantry.
