My niece Shauna Reene Hernes wrote and read this for her mother, at Linda's funeral service. It is a beautiful and loving tribute to my sister:

"On behalf of my dad, my daughters and myself, we would all like to thank you all for coming to rejoice in the life of my mama, Linda.

I wanted to say a few words about my mama, and then I started thinking, there's no way you can describe her in just a few words.

She was truly one of a kind. From a caring soul, amazing listener, teacher, doctor, nurse, quick witted, sharp tongue, loving, and even a fiery temper. She was a woman that cared for everyone, before she ever cared for herself.

Everyone in this room that had any form of encounter with her, whether it was once, or for years, she always left a lasting impression on everyone, no matter the form of interaction you had with her.

There was never nothing simple with my mama either. When she dressed up, she really dressed up and went all out! From her clothing to her hair, jewelry and makeup. Mama just loved to stand out, and stand out, she did!

When it came to Holidays, she always went all out. A fancy meal was always made, and it was never just a simple dinner, it was always an extravagant meal and event. Her house was decorated in every room she could, with that particular holidays themes. Fourth of July, you would go into the bathroom, and there were firework stickers on the toilet or on Halloween, pumpkin stickers. For Thanksgiving there were always cute scarecrow dolls in the bathroom. For Easter, rabbits, and bright colored eggs would be all over the toilet and even the mirror. For Christmas, a shower curtain that had a cartoon Santa on it, where he was nude, yet suds covering his "jingle bells" as she put it.

I would sometimes wonder why she would want to decorate a bathroom of all things, but then I realized, this was my mama, and again, nothing was ever simple with her.

One could not help but to love her outgoing ways, her humor and the way she would express herself that would sometimes leave many with dropped jaws, but in the end, she would cause them to smile. Her humor was sometimes hard for many to adjust to, but to me, it was awesome. Because I got to watch the priceless looks on many peoples faces, to the way she expressed herself.

Sometimes, she was hard to understand in her ways of things, and that caused her and I too not see eye to eye more times than not. Our relationship was no hidden secret, and was very known that it was a rocky one a lot of the times, but one thing for sure, if I needed her, she always had my back. And that goes to show that no matter what, how mad she may be at a moment, you asked her for help, asked for her shoulder to cry on, she instantly would give it to you. She would drop whatever she was doing at that moment, to give you that attention you needed for that moment. That fiery spirit is what always helped to push her and us, her family on. My mama was just spectacular like that.

She always had wonderful advice to offer anyone, and was blunt and true with the words she spoke. She would know that half the time no one would take her advice, but that didn't stop her from being there for them the next time, and again, comforting them with more heart filled advice.

She was a devoted wife, mama, gama, sister, aunt and friend. And all those titles meant the world to her. She either called us all her Earth Angels, or for a few, her birthday presents. She always spoke those words with pride. And that is exactly what mama had in all us, was pride. Even if any of us hurt her, she never lost that love and pride she had in that person.

She had a way about her that you just couldn't fully argue with. If you decided to get into a discussion with her, you had to be prepared to be put in your place with her amazing knowledge, and it would get to the point you just couldn't argue with her, because in the end she always proved she was right.

The last few days I have listened to many of my family members and friends that speak of all the wonderful stories they have about her, they speak of them with such laughter, that it warms my heart to know that my mama was able to touch their lives in such a way that they always smile when they think of her.

Its only been a few days of her passing, and we have already have had to overcome huge hurdles. The day after her passing would have been my parents 40th wedding anniversary, the day after that was my birthday. It was too soon, yet my daddy and I had to face those hurdles. She was with us, but they were two of the hardest days.

So when I said she was truly one of a kind, I meant it, for God broke the mold the day he made her. Everything she ever did, she did with such a passion, I admit, it made me envious of her she could be that strong, and passionate about what she did.

Though, I have to say, God is probably wondering what the heck he was thinking, because now he has my mama, and my aunt Kat up there, and we all know how those two sisters were when together!

She had such a passion for her music too, mainly the oldies from the 50's, and 60's. Always had to dance to them, and could she ever dance! its where I got the love of dancing from, is her. She had such amazing knowledge of music too. Play a song, and she knew it! The 60's were more of her time, her teenage years, and she always spoke of such fond memories of those times. Dragging Main street, and getting a .15 burger and .10 coke with peanuts in it.

Then the 70's happened. And well, to me, I think that was the greatest time of her life, because, I came into her life. But, that's beside the point. She always said though she was not too fond of the 70's style music.

And with the mention of music, it reminds me of a story of my mama. The 80's were my time as a teenager, with me listening to such bands as Bon Jovi, Metallica, and Def Leopard. She never once questioned my music, even if it was loud, she allowed me to listen to it all. But one time her and I were getting ready to head to the store. We get in the car, and the first thing she always had to do, was make sure that radio was on her oldies station. Well, just as she tuned in the station, the DJ came on and began talking about a song. Then he said, and I quote "If you are old enough to remember this song, you are old enough to have a teenager listening to Def Leopard." My mama then made a grunt noise and shook her head. She then said "Def Leopard? The least he could have done was come up with the name of a real band!" Well, I looked to my mama after blinking a few times wondering to myself if she had just really said that, and then told her "Ma, that IS a real band." She looked at me and all she said was "Oh." And it was left at that for her, however I never let her live down that moment. That is just one of the many priceless memories I have of my mama.

She loved to go camping, wearing her knee high stalkings, with shorts and tennis shoes. Always got sun burned on the first day too, to the point she had to wear a shirt over her tank top and a hat during the entire day, and the rest of the trip. She loved to cook on the cute little propane stove, while her oldies were blasting in the back ground. And the end of every day, she always saved up the grease from the bacon or sausage so she could pour it on the campfire later that night. She was somewhat of a pyro. Once, she even singed the top of a tree because she poured a large coffee can of chicken grease on the campfire. After that, none of us were cold the rest of the night, and had to sit about five feet away from the fire. And after that, if we saw her ever walking towards the fire with a can of anything, we all always moved away from the campfire. She left us never needing to trim our eyebrows, or nose hairs, because she helped by singing them off of us all.

We all here are mourning over losing her here on Earth, and she understands how badly we are hurting, for we are still only human, where she has become a perfect angel, yet we do need to rejoice in all the wonderful, amazing memories we all have of her.

I could go on for much longer, because as I stated, my mama could not be described in just a few words, so if anyone wishes to speak of a fond memory of her, please feel free to do so. And I wish to thank you all for being in her life and for loving her to the end. Somehow in some way, all of you made her life amazing. So cry if you must for my mama leaving this world, but as your tears flow, quickly replace the frown with a smile. Smile to a thought of her, of something she said, something you saw her do, or maybe just the thought of a tight hug she gave you.

Thank you mama, for just being you. I love you."
