Stonington - Alvin R. Murch, 59, of Skyline Drive, Oakland, NJ, formerly of the Groton-Stonington area and a former Boy Scout executive, died Saturday at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ.

Mr. Murch served in the Navy from 1945 until retiring in 1966. He served 14 years of the 21 years in the submarine service and was a member of sub school staff for three years before retiring.

After retiring, he worked at Electric Boat and then was a custodian for the Stonington school system before becoming a professional district executive for the Boy Scouts of America.

A member of the Boy Scouts in the area for 13 years, he served as a scoutmaster and troop committeeman and was the recipient of the Scoutmaster's Key and Scouters Award. He served as an executive of the Eastern District of the former Pequot Council of Boy Scouts in 1967.

He was a ranger consultant at Camp Tamarack in Oakland and was a member, recipient and course instructor of the Wood Badge and Order-of-the-Arrow Vigil.

He was born April 24, 1927 in Hartford, the son of Emory and Florence Rowland Murch.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Tucker Murch; five sons, Steven of Groton, Daniel of New Orleans, LA, Matthew of Oakland, Peter of Stamford and Paul of Garfield, NJ, and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 tonight at the Oakland Memorial Home. A memorial graveside service will be conducted in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, at a later date. The Oakland Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
