cod: suicide by hanging also his grandfather in 1932, his father in 1935 and his brother Harry in 1949.Alton Democrat; September 22, 1917

Simon Heemstra, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Heemstra, committed suicide by hanging himself in the barn on a halter rope. No cause is known for the tragedy.
He was a nice, quite boy, good nature and well behaving and was working with his father in the field until a short time before his death.
He went to the house and had lunch with his mother and sister and then asked for pencil, but not finding any, proceeded on his way to the barn. No thought was given to the matter at noon when he did not come to the house for dinner.
His sister, Jennie, went to the barn to call him and found him hanging in the barn. Her screams aroused her father who hastened to see what was the matter and made the dreadful discovery.
The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community goes out to this estimable family in their sad loss.
Funeral services will be held from the house Saturday afternoon, burial taking place in the Hospers cemetery.
