Gladys R. Granflaten, age 96, of Dell Rapids; formerly of Madison and Santa Maria, CA; died Monday, July 11, 2005 at Terrace Manor, Dell Rapids.
Gladys Ruth Arneson was born July 14, 1908, at Howard, to Albert and Berthanna (Gudahl) Arneson. The family later moved to Sioux Falls where Gladys attended high school and earned a teaching degree from Sioux Falls College. In 1928 she began teaching at a new country school in Dell Rapids. Then she taught elementary school in Colman from 1930 to 1935. She married Glen Granflaten on July 4, 1935. They farmed near Franklin and she taught at Franklin School for many years. In 1960 they moved to Santa Maria, where Gladys taught elementary school until her retirement in 1973. In 1982, they returned to Madison were they lived until Glen's death in 1984. She moved to San Luis Obispo, CA in 1986 and she moved to Terrace Manor in Dell Rapids in 1990.
Gladys Granflaten was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Bill; four sisters, Beulah, Norma, Claryce and Ednamae; and one grandson, David.
Survivors include two sons; Jim (Doris) Granflaten of Bayfield CO and Bob (Ellen) Granflaten of Madison, WI; one daughter-in-law, Maureen Tyler of Aztec, NM; four grandchildren, Wendy (Wade) Hyatt, Toni Granflaten (Ed Stewart), Lori (Tom) Neal, Maggie Granflaten and Cody Granflaten; four great-grandchildren, Liv and Anna Hyatt, Brandon Boling and Taylor Neal; one sister, Ruby Graves of Sioux Falls and several nieces and nephews.
