Daughter of Robert Belshaw (1887-1978) and Clarice nee Makin (1890-1979) who married in 1913 in England. She was the youngest of four children, others being; Clarice Maud (1916-1983), Robert (1919-1919) and Harold (1920-2008).
Ethel was murdered by the "School-girl Strangler" Arnold Sodeman (1899-1936) who was subsequently tried and hanged. His other victims were; Mena Griffiths (1918-1930), Hazel Wilson (1914-1931) and June Rushmer (1929-1935).
