The daughter of James and Jane (Johnson) Vardaman, Rachel was raised in Newberry County, South Carolina. She married War of 1812 and Creek War veteran Jacob Souter on January 24, 1815 in Newberry County. They raised a large family together, having 14 children:

James Martin in 1818
Nancy Catherine in 1820
Lucinda Patience in 1821
Burrell Berry in 1823
Martha Ann in 1825
Delila Jane in 1827
Jacob Franklin in 1829
William Langdon in 1831
Thomas Andrew in 1832
Henry Belton in 1835
George Washington in 1837
Luvinia Caroline in 1838

They moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi about 1848, and joined the local Baptist church. Rachel died in 1854, survived by her husband.
