Scottish Folk Hero. Arguably credited as being the man who kept the famous Skye terrier Greyfriars Bobby alive by feeding him scraps of food from his restaurant after the death of Bobby's master, John Gray circa 1858. Traill's Dining Rooms were located on Greyfriars Place in Edinburgh. Reported to have fed Bobby out of sympathy at first, as Bobby aged he was taken in to live as a beloved pet in the Traill home at 18 Keir Street. After John Gray's death Traill was cited by the police for failure to license Bobby, but he argued he did not need a license for the dog as he was not his owner. Though Bobby could have been put down for this, Lord Provost William Chambers stepped forward and paid the license fee. John Traill was born in Dunfermline, the son of a weaver. He was known to have also been in business as a tailor.
