American folk figure. Shelton killed Willie Lyons on Christmas Eve in 1895 at a saloon in St. Louis. Shelton and Lyons were actually friends, but something caused an argument between them. This led to an altercation which then resulted in Shelton's shooting and killing of Lyons. He was tried, convicted and served prison time for the crime which was later immortalized in the song "Stagger Lee."
