Betty-Jean Snapp Greene

PORTVILLE - Betty-Jean Snapp Greene, of 29 Pine St., passed away peacefully Sunday (Sept. 7, 2014) in Olean General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.

She was born April 10, 1922, in Olean, a daughter of the late Franklin W. and Lela Howell Snapp. On July 2, 1940, in Olean, she married Donald L. Greene, who passed away Feb. 6, 1992.

Betty-Jean was a 1939 graduate of Grand Junction Colorado High School and was a graduate of New Penn Beauty School in Olean. Betty-Jean resided in Portville most of her life. During her working years, she was employed as a clerk at several retail stores, worked as a home care helper, assisting people in their home to remain independent. She also operated B.J.'s Beauty Salon in her home.

Betty-Jean started volunteering for the Cattaraugus County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) on Jan. 1, 1994. She contributed over 2,700 volunteer hours to the Cattaraugus County Health Department, Olean General Hospital and the American Red Cross, for which she received the 2014 NYS Senior Citizens Award. At the time of her death, she was still volunteering at the Cattaraugus County Health Department, where she was known as "Gramma Waddles" by the staff.

Someone recently asked her what five things she would want to do if she knew she was going to die soon, she cocked her head, gave the question serious consideration and answered that she had enjoyed a wonderful life, had done everything she wanted to do, and we all know she did it her way. Betty-Jean was blessed with her family, loved to help others and loved her family.

Surviving are two daughters, Silvia Kockler of East Rochester and Glenda Bradley of Kill Buck; two sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Greene of Hampton, Va., and Richard (Marilyn) Greene of Portville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Frank (Suellen) Snapp III.

She was predeceased by her husband; a sister, Josephine Cook; and a brother, Robert F. Snapp.

Burial will be in Bowler Memorial Cemetery, Little Genesee.
