Nelson was the first son of Isaac and Elizabeth Wurtzbaugh. He married Sarah Ann Webb of Baltimore on Nov 26, 1857 in Mason County, Ill. They lived in Crawford County Kansas for 23 years and in 1893 moved near Jennings, Louisiana.

Sarah Ann died in Louisiana in 1897 and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, Louisiana. Sons John Thomas and George Isaac are also buried there.

Nelson married Adelia H Sarver on March 9, 1901 in Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Adelia was previously married to Paul Lapointe from 1884-1900. She and Paul had eight children.

Nelson and Adelia had one daughter Marcet E. born in 1902 when Nelson was 70. A family story says that when Marcet was two Nelson took the girl and left Louisiana by train to return to the family in Kansas. It is not clear what happened to the marriage but Adelia moved to Port Arthur, TX and died in 1927.
