The relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from No. 324 South 8th street on Thursday morning at 11 o'clock."
Reading Times, July 25, 1877

Howard was killed in the Reading Railroad Massacre. Rioters and bystanders were fired on by federal troops and militia brought in from other parts of the state to quell the local uprising during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.

"Howard Cramp was picked up on Penn street, a little above Esterley's store at 8.30 o'clock, and was carried into the drug store where he died. The boy was no rioter, but a peaceable and quiet boy, and was there simply as a spectator. Ball entered immediately above the hip on the left side and passed out on a level on the right side."
(excerpted from the inquest report published in the Reading Times)
