Born November 18, 1911, in Frankfort, Michigan, to Edith A. and John O. Olson. Dorothy’s parents died while she was quite young and she was raised by her Aunt, Lena Swanson. She attended school in Michigan, graduating High School in 1930. She attended Strayer College in Washington, D.C. Proving her belief in the importance of education, Dorothy graduated from Mt. San Jacinto College at age 75.
Dorothy worked in civil service for the FBI and the U.S. Postal Service. She married Henry Showalter in 1932, and they had one daughter, Charlotte. On August 20, 1946. Dorothy married Howard C. Callahan and they had two daughters, Ann, Kathleen, and a son, Raymond.
She lived in many different places before settling in southern California, where she worked in civil service at Camp Pendleton until retiring in 1976.
Dorothy was a strong supporter of the United States military, with great respect for the United States government, receiving more than one invitation to presidential inauguration events. She was a member of Military Widows, attending regular meetings and functions. She crocheted hundreds of warm shawls and blankets for soldiers and providing comfort for injured service members through her support activities. She was a charter member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.
Above all else, Dorothy loved and guided her family. She attended many, many family reunions, loved and shared her belief in family with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be especially remembered for her independence, quick wit, spirit of adventure, and the tenaciousness that guided her through many diverse endeavors. She ran two miles on her 70th birthday. Ask any of her family, “What’s the worst that could happen?” In unison you will her response from them, “Paper in the ashtray!”
