Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1950 to 1955, 1958 and 1960), he was a pitcher with the New York Giants and Detroit Tigers. Born George Elwell Spencer, he attended Bexley High School in Ohio and following graduation, he enlisted with the United States Navy. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon returning home, he enrolled at Ohio State University and excelled in football, as the Buckeye's starting quarterback, in addition to pitching for their baseball squad. Signed by the Giants as an amateur free agent in 1948, he marked his Major League debut on August 17, 1950 and recorded a victory in ten games pitched that year. The following season (1951), he produced a career-high ten wins in 57 games, primarily as a reliever and was a contributor to the Giants' clinching of the National League Pennant. He appeared in two games during the 1951 World Series. In 122 regular season games, he compiled a 16 win 10 loss record with a 4.05 lifetime ERA in 251 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the steel industry.
